The forest was eerily quiet as Jay Filburn and Chandra Rathore moved cautiously through the dense trees, their breaths shallow and their movements deliberate. They had been running for what felt like hours, and the weight of their separation from the others pressed heavily on them.
Lunaris, Chandra’s silver moon dragon, hovered nearby, her glowing wings casting faint light over the shadows. Ember, Jay’s fiery fire dragon, flitted ahead, his flames subdued but ready to ignite at the first sign of danger.
“We have to keep moving,” Jay whispered, his green eyes scanning the darkness. “The drones could still be tracking us.”
Chandra nodded, her dark eyes betraying her worry.
“I hate this,” she murmured. “Being split up. Not knowing if the others are safe.”
Jay’s jaw tightened. “It wasn’t supposed to be like this. We were supposed to stick together, to stay stronger as a group, but those drones…” He trailed off, his hands clenched into fists.
The memory of their escape was still fresh. Vexor had been relentless in their pursuit. The corporation’s drones, sleek, metallic machines with glowing red sensors and razor-sharp precision, had descended on them without warning. Their whirring engines and pulsing lights were unmistakable, a chilling reminder of Vexor’s reach. The children had fought hard, their dragons using every ounce of their fledgling powers to shield them, but when the drones began to overwhelm their defenses, there had been no choice.
“We had to split up to survive,” Chandra said quietly, as if reading Jay’s thoughts. Her voice wavered. “I just hope it wasn’t a mistake.”
Jay shook his head firmly. “It wasn’t. We didn’t have another option. If we’d stayed together, the drones would have taken us all.” He paused, his voice softening. “But I hate not knowing if they’re okay. If they’re safe.”
Chandra’s mind wandered to Surya, her twin brother. They had always been inseparable, their bond deeper than words could express. Being apart from him now felt like losing a part of herself.
“Surya will be fine,” she said, trying to convince herself as much as Jay. “He’s smart. He’ll figure things out, and Cassia is with him. She’s resourceful.”
Jay offered a faint smile. “Bowen and Nyla? They’re tough, too. Gravok’s a powerhouse, and Zynthra’s quick and clever. They’ll keep each other safe.”
For a moment, silence settled between them, broken only by the rustling of leaves and the occasional chirp of distant crickets. The quiet carried an edge of unease. Vexor’s reach was vast, and their technology, machines designed to hunt, capture, or destroy, made every step feel precarious.
Chandra glanced at Lunaris, whose silver violet eyes glimmered with quiet reassurance.
“They’ll find their way back to us,” she said softly. “We just have to keep heading toward the mall. That was the plan, right?”
